Bonsai artists use hundreds of varieties of plant materials to create bonsai.  The trees are like snowflakes as no two turn out exactly the same.  We can divide types of bonsai into four (4) general classes:  Evergreen, Deciduous, Tropical and Conifer.  Here are some examples of our work.  ENJOY!

Why Bonsai?  Why Now Because modern life can be stressful, hurried, worrisome and sometimes boring and lacking in meaning for people depending on their age, attitude and stage of life.  The joy and therapeutic benefits of gardening are well known and the art of bonsai is reflective of Japan where it was adopted from the Chinese during the Kamakura period (1185-1333)  Japanese Gardens are recognized for their soothing qualities, tranquility, symbolism, and creation of natural scenes in miniature.  They are influenced by Zen Buddhism and the natural landscape in Japan where they originated. The large number of Japanese immigrants during the past 50 years has brought this art form to America, especially on the west coast, and now fanning out to the entire country.  Bonsai is an art form that can have all the elements of the Japanese Garden, but in miniature.  For the Japanese, bonsai represents a harmony between man, nature and the soul. One does not have to have a large area to practice the art and meditative qualities of bonsai.  Although bonsai are outdoor trees, you can work on them indoors when the weather is too cold.  Our creations are the Perfect Gifts for anyone, but an easy choice for the many people on our list who "have everything" (at least everything that we can afford)!

Bonsai can be developed from seeds or cuttings, from young trees or from naturally occurring stunted trees transplanted into containers,  Most Bonsai range in height from 2 inches to about 3 feet.  Bonsai are kept small and trained by pruning branches and roots, by periodic repotting, by pinching off new growth, and by wiring the branches and trunk so that they grow into a desired shape.  A properly cared for bonsai tree should outlive a full sized tree of the same species.  It is not a genetically dwarfed plant and is not kept small by cruelty in any way.  Your expertly packaged web purchased tree or the one that you choose from our nursery will have all this work done, and you can have the relaxation and meditative benefits of this endeavor by maintaining your tree.

Wise Old Trees, The Living Art

Bonsai is the stylistic re-creation of natural tree formations in miniature which are grown in containers, usually outdoors.  Or, as my friend Harry Able says "It is the ritualized torture of little trees."  (We are kidding!)  People new to bonsai are always fascinated with age.  They ask:  "How old is that tree?"  Our answer is almost always "I don't know".  Number one in importance is always the beauty of the creation, and the skill of the artist.  Also important is the apparent age of the bonsai, not how old it actually is.  After that, it's a matter of taper, ramification, harmony between tree and pot, and finally the health and vitality of the bonsai tree itself.  It is quite possible to create a high quality bonsai tree in an afternoon given the right material and skill.
